I would like to say a massive thank you for putting on these events. They are just the best. From yourselves, volunteers and fellow runners the Centurion community is just amazing. Thank you again and have a great Christmas and Happy New Year.
Another Centurion year is done, and I hope that the races have been all you could have hoped for. Thank you for a brilliant Winter Downs 200 race, and for having Drew come over to Harting Down to see me safely off the course when the deterioration of my feet made it impossible to continue. It’s clearly an event in which one can benefit from experience, and I hope that I’ll be able to bring what I’ve learned to the edition in 2026! The math of it is so interesting! I loved the event and feel that it’s eminently doable – provided that all the personal maintenance elements hold together. My body felt great down to the final inch near the ground – but my feet are wrecked, and I’m unable to walk. It’s gutting to have been beaten by this one thing, but I’ll bring the footcare lessons of this race to the next one. And yes: I do wish to return in 2026, with runners like Jade, Zoe and Helen showing the way as far as grit and determination goes! Thanks also for liaising with my husband, Jeremy, as events unfolded. He’s not a runner and gets anxious when I do these things that involve long spells in the dark and on my own, even though he’s always encouraging and supportive. It helps him to know that all runners in your events are so well looked after. The Centurion community has evolved into something very special, and we in the community are talking more about women continuing racing into old age, which is a great thing. But there are dilemmas. On the one hand, one needs to get finishes into the book, but on the other, the time to attempt the tougher events must be ‘now’, because the future is not guaranteed. I’m trying to balance this in my mind. WD 200 is my kind of event, rewarding brainwork and preparation as much as physical execution. But I still have much to learn – as evidenced by my macerated feet and a spot of dodgy night navigation on the Vanguard Way. So, we recover and press on!
